When your baby teeth fall out, the next batch of teeth will be permanent–or at least they are supposed to be. Sadly, this isn't always the case for most Americans. According to statistics, millions of dental extractions in 98007 are performed each year.

This makes you wonder, why would your dentist want to take out your permanent teeth? Sometimes, tooth extractions are necessary to restore and maintain your oral health. Ironic as it seems, there are certain cases where a tooth extraction is the best solution to your oral problem.

Why Do You Need a Tooth Extraction?

What is a Tooth Extraction?

Dental extractions are also referred to as tooth pulling, exodontia, and tooth extraction. In this procedure, your dentist will manually remove your teeth from their sockets, in your alveolar bone. There are two different types of dental extractions:

  • Simple
  • Surgical

A simple tooth extraction is performed if the tooth is visible. The recovery is faster and easier with the patients usually going back to work the next day. Furthermore, you'll probably only need OTC painkillers for the discomfort.

Why Do You Need a Tooth Extraction?

Patients with very poor oral hygiene are prone to tooth decay. Thankfully, tooth decay can be treated through fillings and root canal therapy. However, if the infection is too severe, your dentist may have to remove the decayed tooth.

An impacted wisdom tooth may also require surgical dental extractions–especially if it's causing pain. Removing an impacted tooth will also reduce your risk of infection. Individuals who are about to undergo orthodontic treatment are often advised to have their teeth extracted to make room for other teeth to move around.
