Understanding the Anatomy of a Tooth

The Outer Layer

The outer layer of your tooth has one basic part – the crown. This is the visible part of your tooth that peaks above your gums. It's the first thing people see when you smile and covered in a protective hard layer called enamel.

Although the enamel is tough, it is still prone to cavities. Cavities develop when bacteria in your mouth produce acids that erode the enamel. You can prevent cavities from forming by brushing and flossing your teeth as per your dentist's instructions.

The Inner Layer

The inner layer of your tooth includes the dentin, dental pulp, and the tooth roots. Dentin is what's found directly underneath the enamel. It sends signals to let you know that something is wrong with your tooth.

Beneath it is a dental pulp consisting of nerves, lymph, and blood vessels. When bacteria has penetrated inside the pulp, your dentist will suggest root canal therapy to save your tooth and to prevent the infection and decay from spreading. The tooth roots are attached to your jawbone. Furthermore, they help stabilize your teeth and allow you to chew and bite with ease.
